The challenge
The RAAF Security and Fire School (SFS) is responsible for preparing trainees in critical capabilities including airfield security, K9 handling and firefighting operations.
While their instructors are highly experienced operators, the operational tempo leaves limited time for structured professional development.
Over time, this reduced opportunities to refine instructional techniques and continuously improve training delivery.
As a result, the school sought to strengthen its instructor capability to ensure training remained aligned with the high operational standards expected of Defence personnel.
The approach
ERS was engaged to conduct a review of the existing training approach, identify capability gaps and support instructor development.
Following this assessment, ERS designed and delivered a dedicated Instructor Development Program focused on:
- Modern instructional theory
- Best-practice training techniques and methodologies
- Practical applications for integrating learning with trainees
The program was delivered at the RAAF’s Ipswich base, bringing together instructors from across Australia to participate in the training
The impact
Over a two-and-a-half-year period, more than 200 SFS instructors completed the program, developing stronger capability in theoretical aspects of teaching, coaching and learning behaviours.
The initiative significantly increased instructor confidence in delivering training aligns with training, with a 300% improvement in course effectiveness, strengthening training outcomes across the school.
