Operational Safety Training Instructors (OST) employed by government agencies are typically challenged by having a large number of trainees, as well as being tasked with multiple aspects to instruct on.
This leaves little time for instructors to improve their own skills, especially with firearms.
ERS was asked to assist in upskilling Operational Safety and Training Instructors (OST) across Australia.
What we did
ERS developed a training program designed to improve instructors skills, knowledge and attitudes in a very short period on the principles of firearm instruction.
This training focused on cognitive aspects, why trainees learn, behavioural training, accelerated learning techniques as well as physical aspects such as economy of motion, biomechanical advantage and better understanding in weapon manipulation and fundamentals.
When combining cognitive, physical and scientific aspects of training the results for accuracy, speed and efficacy were outstanding.
The outcome
The training had very positive results, with demonstrable improvement in all areas of pistol shooting, resulting in improved instructor skills and confidence.
Within the space of four days, speed, accuracy and efficacy was improved by more than 300%, with even better results over five days of training.
The result was increased instructor capability and confidence in coaching trainees, leading to an improvement in trainee capabilities and greater capability within the government agency.
