About the client
With operations covering Australia, the Congo, Papua New Guinea and the Middle East, an Australian mining company had a large number of employees travelling to and from its various sites and locations.
To ensure the safety of those employees as they travelled to conduct exploration or client engagement tasks, ERS was asked to provide travel tracking services for their workforce across multiple continents, including across South America, Afghanistan and Africa.
Challenge
The client required extensive travel tracking and travel security arrangements to ensure the safety of employees in a wide range of locations, and the ability to respond quickly should they encounter issues.
ERS was tasked to deliver pre-travel and in-country briefs, journey management plans, live tracking and intelligence monitoring. In addition, ERS teams needed to be available to deploy and provide intelligence-led security assistance and staffing as required during travel.
ERS was also asked to provide timely, ad-hoc security solutions for the travellers at their location, to resolve issues as they arose.
What we did
Prior to departure, ERS delivered High-Risk Environment Training (HRET) at an undisclosed location to prepare teams to operate safely in complex and potentially hostile environments. The training, led by ex-Australian Special Forces personnel, combined immersive sessions and realistic simulations, focusing on threat identification, risk mitigation, situational awareness, self-sufficiency, and trauma management.
When employees were travelling, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) team, monitored locations for geopolitical, criminal and terrorist events that could disrupt travel, and provide early advice so locations could be bypassed.
ERS also used open-source intelligence (OSINT) and the Everywhere tracking application to provide reliable security oversight, which allowed for localised emergency response when required.
When issues arose, ERS facilitated seamless communication between dispersed teams to respond quickly and ensure client safety.
The outcome
More than 100 employees of the mining client were successfully supported in their travel over a two year period to locations including Australia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Jordan, Oman, U.A.E, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and PNG.
Using trained operators, OSINT and real-world knowledge, ERS was able to deliver real-time information to inform decision making and ensure a safe and profitable journey.
For example, when a terrorist attack occurred in Africa, ERS promptly informed the client and guided them to bypass the incident, preventing any disruption to their operations.
With access to a 24/7 tracking asset, the client had up-to-date knowledge about all travelling employees, increasing their security in hostile and complex environments, while ensuring the company's operations could continue safely.
